The village of Metamora, Indiana is home to the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site

In the early 1800's canal transportation was seen as the premier way to move goods from remote interior areas to the developing markets in the fast growing cities. David Mount platted the town of Metamora in 1838 along the route of the Whitewater Canal project. Today in Metamora vistors can see an operating grist mill, a wooden aqueduct that carries the canal over Duck Creek, and a restored lock just east of town in the old Millville area.

During the season, which runs from May through October, short trips on a canal boat or a train are available.

The first weekend in October the town of Metamora holds Canal Days , a huge fleamarket event which brings thousands of people to the village for three big days.

Starting Thanksgiving weekend the annual Christmas Walk treats visitors to four weekends of luminaries along the canal, decorations throughout the town, strolling carollers and other signs of Holiday Cheer.
